The Sunrise Project raises funds from people and organisations who share our mission. We re-grant roughly 2/3 of these funds to other non-government organisations and community groups in line with our charitable objectives.
We work closely with both funders and grantees and, as such, we generally don’t accept unsolicited grant proposals. However, we’re constantly on the look out for good ideas and new collaborations. So if you’re working on issues that closely align with our programs and you think there is an opportunity for us to work together, please get in touch: [email protected]
Australian small grants program
In Australia, we have an open application process for small grants (up to AUD $10,000) for community groups working to hasten the transition from fossil fuels to clean, renewable energy or to protect Australia’s ecosystems from the negative impacts of the coal and gas industries.
This small grants fund, known as the Peter Gray Community Action Fund, is supported by a range of funders and is named after Australian grassroots climate activist Peter Gray.
Eligibility: Not-for-profit organisations with a purpose consistent with the purpose of The Sunrise Project. In most cases we grant to income tax exempt non-profits but there are exceptions for certain circumstances so send us a quick email if you’d like to understand more. (Note: DGR status is NOT required).
Priorities: Our priority is to support grant proposals that aim to:
- Drive the shift to renewable energy and/or keep fossil fuels in the ground;
- Help build the capacity of community groups for the longer term;
- Support small community groups that do not have other funding options; and
- Can demonstrate a clear strategy that will result in real-world outcomes.
How to apply: If your idea clearly fits into the above priorities then please complete this application form and email it to [email protected]. If you’re not sure if your idea fits the criteria, send us a quick email with a rough outline of your thinking and we’ll let you know if it is the right ballpark so you don’t waste time on a full application if it isn’t going to fit.
